EN ISO 13849-1 goes beyond the qualitative approach of EN 954-1 to include a quantitative assessment of the safety functions. Performance levels (PL) are defined in EN ISO 13849-1 to classify different safety-related capacities into their respective categories.
ISO 13849 is a safety standard which applies to parts of machinery control systems that are assigned to providing safety functions (called safety-related parts of a control system). [1] ISO 13849-1, Part 1: General principles for design, provides safety requirements and guidance on the principles of design and integration of safety-related parts of control systems (hardware or software).
Categories were used also in the earlier machinery safety standard EN 954-1:1996. The report describes in detail the meaning of each category and also gives an example of a category 2 safety function. Se hela listan på machinerysafety101.com e. ≥10 -8 and <10 -7.

ISO 13849-1:2015 provides safety requirements and guidance on the principles for the design and integration of safety-related parts of control systems (SRP/CS), including the design of software. For these parts of SRP/CS, it specifies characteristics that include the performance level required for carrying out safety functions.

EN ISO 13849-1 is the most important standard for regulating the basic principles and performance required of a safety control system for machines and devices. This standard was greatly revised in November 2006. This revision has caused major changes in the fundamentals of safety system design. This document was prepared to help explain
• PL (Performance Level) is a technology-neutral concept that can be used for electrical, mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic safety solutions. • SIL (Safety Integrity Level) can, however, only be used for electrical, electronic or programmable safety solutions. Experience EN ISO 13849-1 uses categories from EN 954-1 for defining While the ISO 13849-1 "good" elements, such as the holistic approach and the design considerations, should not be overlooked, safety controller manufacturers will provide guidance on the category and performance level of the each type of input and output hookup. If an electromechanical position switch fulfils the requirements of ISO 13849-1, Annex K, then, due to EN ISO 13849-2, it is about a so called „well-tried component“.
